  • If you're a fan of Minnesota Slimz aka Malik Kahaar Ali (a member of East Coast underground rap group Soul Kid Klik), you may not know what he done back when he first joined the rap game back in 1990. "All in a Day's Work" is a rap concept album exploring three different themes (love, a "world of confusion", and what I would like to call a "day in the life of an MC") and his only album released under the Mark Dee banner during his tenure with MCA Records. Citing influences such as De La Soul, Eric B. and Rakim, N.W.A., Slick Rick, and Heavy D. and the Boyz, Mark Dee's cool rapping is backed by a funky New Jack Swing polishing by producers Dennis Kid and Michael Looks. The album opens with an intro that takes place at a bar in New York where a seemingly-drunk guy talks about his expectations for the fame of Mark and his producers, Kid and Looks. Following is a short instrumental version of "So Deep" (which would appear later in the album), and the first real track, the funky "Soothed by the Groove", comes on with Mark Dee rapping about the ways that funk can get you addicted, and ends with a piano solo by Joel Martin. Two tracks in the "world of confusion" theme follow, "Get a Hold of Yourself", the album's only single and a minor club hit, and "The Game of Life", which either refers to the Milton Bradley board game or James Conway's cellular automaton. Mark Dee explores the love theme with songs such as "Let It All Hang Out" (featuring the soulfoul R&B-ish vocals of Nate Tinsley... or Dennis Kid or Joel Martin?), "Men Will Be Men", and "Just Give Me Romance" (another popular track, which was even featured on some European love song compilations in the 1990's). He continues in the "world of confusion" theme with "Victim of Circumstance" and the title cut. Next up is the 6 1/2 minute epitome of dopeness, "So Deep", where Mark shares the mic with two other local New York area rappers, MC Do Damage (who would later become Keith Murray of Death Squad fame) and KMC. It is the first of two tracks on the album that explore late 80's/early 90's life as an MC from the East Coast, the other being the album-closer "Hail to the Chief", in which Mark gives a shoutout to his friends (including the Murder ONE bodyguard squad) at the end. Then, after the final track fades out, the album ends with an outro where the guy we heard at the beginning of the album is rammed to his fate by a group of party drinkers in the bar, who appearantly enjoy listening to the album all over again on a boombox. I think it's a great forgotten rap gem; overall, I highly reccomend this album to (at least) any fan of golden-age rap or Soul Kid Klik.
