  • Celebrating its 50th release (my, does time fly), PoleGroup treats us with a new collaborative project by Oscar Mulero, Exium and Reeko, the three producers arranging a proper goodie under the pseudonym Selección Natural. All tracks have been made in common collaboration, with a singular goal in mind: dance floor destruction. Each of the label's core and constitutive members have worked on their own sound parts, that in a successive phase have been assigned randomly to others to work and tweak them, in a creation loop that somehow represented the true essence of the label. Here is how the makers themselves explained the making of process: "a creation loop that means you’ll never know who is making what.". The artists involved produced different components and different parts during random points in time.Selección Natural, in a nutshell, is quite simply a superb self titled debut record. Functional. Heavy, with adroit production techniques. A remarkable manifest of eight consecutive, exuberant techno festivities. It's a rather relentless ride from start to finish, a ride where flashy distractions or superfluous diversions are vacant, and the music is inundated with creatively nuanced layers of compelling straight out techno. Most, if not all tracks, are battered by unswerving rhythm and engulfed by whirring atmospherics. This is a respectful and puristic classic at heart, enabling the genre we all love so much to forge new paths and directions and therefore ultimately ensure its own growth, relevance and survival. As the quartet's individual contributions were done separately, with one laying down their part and then passing it on through randomly to each of the other members to continue and complete, the improvisational and raw feel of the music adds to the record's explosive grit. The impressive results symbolise the close musical connection between them as they successfully captured and built on the essence of what the label is about both in process and output making this a release that techno afficionados of all stripes will appreciate and measure the competitors against. To conclude, this is what the label issued as its official statement about the release:"You’ll find no ambient interludes, no anthems, no big breakdowns... every piece in this creation has been designed for the finest dancefloors. Rough textures mixed with solid beats and continuous synth lines, techno in essence made by those who never left the boat during rough times—pioneers making the soundtrack of the future".From me, an absolute 5/5. Things this good will slay dance floors for years to come. Should they not, you are visiting the wrong clubs.
